I had the priviledge ( although I didn't realize it until years later ) of playing with Johnny during the " lost years ". I played in a TEJANO band " The Stardusters " from Houston and we also recorded with GoldenEagle. We got hooked up with Johnny as his back up band ( six meskins- one white boy- one black )This make up of musicians shows Johnny was an equal opportunity employeer, Ha-Ha !!! and did gigs with Johnny all over Texas and Louisiana. We did this from 1967 to 1968. I always enjoyed Johnny tearing up his rendition of " I Found A Love " boy could that man sing, he was 31 and I turned 21 playing with Johnny in St Martineville, LA. Last saw Johnny when he played Billy Blues in Houston on Richmond St. It brought tears to my eyes to see what was left of Johnny compared to the Johnny I played with at 21 and he was 31. But he was still shouting the blues in his beloved TEXAS !! I remember playing the clubs with Johnny in Jasper, Woodville, Bay City, Beaumont, Needville, Wharton, Bryan, Stafford. If the club had a dance floor and used live music Johnny never said NO , he was ready to gig there. Johnny never showed or acted like a super star but he let his music shine through and show that INDEED HE WAS A SUPER STAR !!! too bad he left us at such a young age, I would have loved to play with him again and go on the road one more time !!! Ive been listening to a lot of Johhnys work lately and was so sad to know he is no longer with us. Bring Your Fine Self Home and Tin Pan Alley from the Montreaux gig with SRV are my all time favourite blues tracks. Im no expert on the subject of the Blues but I know what I like and Johnny will always be a legend.
